Beyond the Business: May 26 & 27

There are aspects of Boston Microgreens that I would like to mention that fall outside the concepts of growing and business. Any company can claim that their employees and customers feel like they are a part of a family created by the organization as a whole, Oftentimes, I have found this to be untrue whether the poor relationship be between employees or the company and customer. I have personally experienced workplaces where employees verbally argue throughout the day. I have also worked in pleasant environments where one comes, does their work, and leaves without pulling too much attention to themselves. Right off the bat, Boston Microgreens has proven to be in a category of its own. The company prides itself on being a part of the Boston community. From the short time that I have spent working with the company so far, I would have to agree with this statement completely and even take it one step further. I have never met a group of individuals so different from one another but so kind and open. The small crew of seven individuals welcomed me into their workplace without any trace of hesitation. Although each of their backgrounds could not be more different from one another, the team works as if they were one and the same. This is attributed to the fact that the team obviously cares so deeply about each other, their work and customers that they serve. I have never met a group of people who respected and enjoyed each other's company so much. Despite the fact that I was a newcomer in a small business, referring simply to the literal size and not the figurative scale of the business, I felt instantly welcomed into their space. When it comes to their dedication to their craft, everyone readily explained each process and its importance to me as if it were the air they breathed. Passionate does not even come close to describing the team that Homberg has put together. One example of this that will stand out in my head forever occurred on harvest day. One member of the team, who the day before had been talking about his efforts to correct some issues that had had with a specific variety that is popular among their customers, was beginning to harvest a tray of that variety. He handed me a small piece of the red shiso to try for myself because he was so proud of how beautiful it was. He went on to say that he was so excited for the restaurants to receive their orders from this batch because of how fresh and perfect it was. They're going to love it, he said. Lastly, I wanted to touch upon the aforementioned concept of community. Homberg stresses, both on his company website and through conversation, the importance of personal connection in the industry. Personally, I believe that there are many degrees of connection that can be witnessed in business. When someone claims that they want their consumers to feel that they have a personal connection to their supplier oftentimes this turns out to be to a lesser degree than expressed by the supplying company. BMG, however, goes above and beyond in a way that I couldn't have expected. After harvesting and packaging orders the morning of their deliveries, I was allowed to assist on the deliveries going out on and around West Broadway in South Boston. The employee who is in charge of the deliveries and I took off on foot, walking through the street. I originally expected that we would hand off the neatly packaged greens to someone at the front of house in each restaurant and move onto the next consumer. Instead, the two of us walked the greens ourselves into the back of each restaurant. The workers and chefs greeted us with excited smiles, conversing with the individual that I was sidekick to. He and each person in the kitchen were on a first name basis. They joked, talked about how they were doing and discussed anything that needed to be done for the next deliveries. Furthermore, he even took the time to introduce me and explain that I would be the ride along for the summer. When the company states that they aim to create a community within the city of Boston, I would have to say that this is an understatement, Boston Microgreens has created a family.
