Sunflower and Seeds

Despite the fact that our Farm Manager was still out on injury, we had a bit of a smoother delivery day in comparison to the prior week. One of the most outstanding part of the day was a conversation had about the sunflower greens. Through my experience with harvesting specific varieties of greens for the nutrition mix for Monday markets, I have had my run ins with the sunflower greens. Out of all of the greens I have harvested so far, my least favorite are basil and sunflower. The biggest problem with sunflower greens is the fact that the seed is difficult for the plant to shed during the growth process. Because having seed in one's greens is not the most popular thing, I have to spend an serious amount of time pulling seeds off of delicate leaves that tend to tear if the seed is pulled on too hard. There also tends to be a lot of seeds stuck on the sunflower greens when its time to harvest. For  this harvest day, however, one of my coworkers noted while harvesting the sunflower that the volume of seeds stuck to the leaves was noticeably less than normal. He stopped to ask if anything was done differently to the sunflower to change this pattern in the sunflower. As it turns out, the sunflower seeds were soaked for a while prior to seeding as they do with the pea seeds. I think this is definitely a good tactic with difficult seeds. I wonder if it would be useful for cilantro because those seeds also tend to get stuck on the cotyledon leaves. I'm not sure with a crop like cilantro if soaking the seeds would negatively affect the plant due to the fact that it is not as hearty as pea and sunflower greens. I will continue to keep an eye out for the sunflower seeds to see if they continue to soak them to lessen the effect of the tough seeds. I would also like to play around with my cilantro idea at the hydrofarm this upcoming semester.

Here is the stock pile of our product that I mentioned in a previous day's writeup. I managed to snag a picture in the walk in fridge while doing my deliveries in Southie for the day.
